If you’re accustomed to the deliberately mundane nature of simulators, then Fishing: Barents Sea Complete Edition should be a familiar outing. But the visual quirks did take me out of the experience relatively frequently. Sound design fares a lot better as the atmospheric soundtrack does add to the aforementioned peaceful nature. There are additionally a few visual oddities like water clipping into the boat and objects as well as effects (like reflections) simply popping in. The water is also (surprisingly) underwhelming. The frame rate chugs somewhere in the 20s a lot of the time, and texture quality is low. However, the Unreal-powered game doesn’t look or run the best here.

Thus, there are literal miles of sea to manually see before the whole map opens up.įor Switch, a game like Fishing is nice because the portable aspect makes the grinding more tolerable.

The only caveat is that you must have previously explored an area to fast travel to it, and only a portion of the map has been unlocked in the early stages. You typically have the option to manually sail to whatever point on the map you desire, or you can use the fast travel function.

Since the actual fishing portion lasts mere seconds and is reduced to a few button presses, sailing really makes up the bulk of the game. I had a bit of a zen feeling as I sailed out on the open seas, just watching the waves lap along the way and hearing the motor buzz. While I did describe Fishing: Barents Sea Complete Edition as being a grind fest earlier, I still found it to be rather relaxing. They aren’t the same game by any means, but the mechanics and rules function pretty much beat for beat. Throughout my playthrough, I couldn’t help but keep thinking that it was as if I were playing Farming Simulator, but instead of using tractors to harvest crops, I was using boats to gather fish. An in-game minute passes every 10 real-world seconds, so time flows relatively quickly.

The game does run on a full in-game calendar, counting all 365 days of the year. Wait too long and your gear will degrade and be lost. If you miss that window, the results of your catch will gradually become worse. When setting out a piece of gear, such as a longline, a certain amount of hours need to pass before the prime time to retrieve it comes around. There are particular seasons, however, so fish population rises and falls as time goes on. Then you need to use your map to see where the most popular fish is the most prominent out in the water. Thus, you need to monitor which type of fish has the highest demand. There are different types of fish, and each of them sells at different prices per pound. Fishing: Barents Sea Complete Edition can be classified as a simulator, so it takes itself relatively seriously.

That said, there is still some strategy to the gameplay experience. There are even tasks to complete that tend to repeat themselves, further adding to the feeling of grind. As a result, pushing further in Fishing is without a doubt a bit of a grind fest. Progression is handled via selling your catch to earn money and sailing around, which increases the experience points needed to be granted new licenses to pilot larger vessels. You start off with longline fishing and gradually work your way up to the other two as you pull in more hauls. There are three fishing methods: longline, net, and trawling. This isn’t about heading out on the lake and catching a few big ones for family dinner this is about bringing in hauls that can sustain communities. Here, you’ll man different types of vessels, each suited to different types of industrial-class fishing. That’s what I expected from Fishing: Barents Sea Complete Edition as well, but it turns out that this experience is a little different. Fishing games in general are pretty much all like this. For the most part, they all follow a pretty similar concept - either head out on the water on a boat, or stand by the shoreline, cast your rod, and wait for the perfect moment to strike your aquatic target. Fishing games have become surprisingly plentiful on Switch.
